General Notes
A very varied palm growing from 1 m to 5m high depending on location within the understorey. Makes a good small indoor palm or garden specimen in shaded sheltered position in warm climates. Used to make walking sticks for returned soldiers after World War II by digging them up, drying, cutting to length, carving and smoothing the root ball base into a comfortable handle. The berries are sweet with a peppery flavour.
Can be found in its natural location in clusters of up to ten plants, created from seed dropped around it giving the impression its a clumping palm.
Propagation Notes
Fresh Seed
The seed takes 6 - 9 mths to ripen. Pick the fruit when it is very red, off the tree or from off the ground. Peel off the outer flesh or if too hard, soak the seeds in warm water for 48 - 72 hours to loosen the outer flesh. Change the water daily. Discard any seeds that float to the top, keep the ones that sink. Floating seeds won't germinate as they lack an endosperm. Wash the seeds thoroughly with Solvol soap to remove any remaining pulp. Allow to dry. Store in a cool, dark place. It is best to sow the seed as soon as possible for best results.
